Depiction of scene from Siyer-i Nebi, where Sayyiduna Hamza & Imam Ali leading the Muslim armies at Badr

On the 17th of Ramadan in the year 2 A.H., the battle of Badr marked the first significant battle of Islam. This event is highly enriched by Muslims as a pivotal moment in early Islamic history, as it resulted in a glorious victory for the followers of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Despite being a small army, the Muslims were able to defeat a much larger and organised Makkan army, with the help of divine intervention.

The battle of Badr played a crucial role in the survival of Islam, and it is often referred to as “the small holy war” (al-jihad al-asghar). When some of the Companions asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about “the greater holy war” (al-jihad al-akbar), he ﷺ replied that it was the battle against one’s own carnal soul. This Hadith serves as a testament to the fact that Islam is not merely a religion of the sword.
